As always, your feedback is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to share your thoughts with me or your Port of Rotterdam contact.

Together, these stories provide a coherent view of a port in transition, grounded in daily operations and driven by long-term ambition.

The ‘Highlights’ section brings together stories that connect the past, present and future. We mark 60 years of containers in Rotterdam and reflect on their lasting impact. In the film From Past to Future: The Story of Our Port, generations of makers and thinkers come together in a portrayal of continuity and change.

At the operational core of the port, ‘Behind the Scenes’ steps into the world of deepsea container terminals. What may seem like a straightforward process reveals itself as a complex chain of people, systems and decisions. Behind every container lies a network of collaboration that keeps the port moving, around the clock.

Looking ahead, ‘Hi from the Future’ introduces Recharge Rotterdam. While the direction towards electrification, hydrogen and circular production is clear, investment decisions often stall due to the absence of system-wide conditions. Recharge Rotterdam focuses on addressing these bottlenecks and accelerating implementation.

Closer to home, ‘Building the Future’ takes you into the port itself. From activity along the Nieuwe Waterweg to the large-scale construction projects shaping the industrial complex, the port continues to evolve both in its physical form and in its role within a more sustainable energy and logistics system.

Shifting to the European level, ‘Meanwhile In Brussels’ examines the European Commission’s EU Ports Strategy. Translating this strategy into effective policy requires continuous dialogue between ports and policymakers. In conversation with ESPO Secretary General Isabelle Ryckbost, we explore how the realities of European seaports can be better reflected in the regulatory framework.

In ‘Headlines’, we focus on resilience. The port of Rotterdam must continue to operate whatever the circumstances. From cyberattacks and sabotage to power outages and geopolitical tensions, the port prepares for a wide range of potential disruptions. In the background, specialists work continuously to ensure that critical processes and supply chains remain operational. Safeguarding essential flows such as energy, food and medical goods is central to this effort.

Welcome to this new edition of the Rotterdam Port Magazine. Through this digital publication, we aim to provide context and perspective on the developments shaping the port of Rotterdam, from daily operations to the strategic challenges and opportunities that define its future.
