Port Alert is an innovative app that provides real-time information to everyone in container logistics, particularly in road transport. This tool provides drivers and planners at terminals and depots with constant access to up-to-date data on congestion, disruptions and turnaround times, enabling more efficient planning. Jeroen de Rijcke, Alexander van Eeden Petersman and Reimar Mommers share their experiences.

Virtual queue: the future

Planning

Anyone can download the Port Alert app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app provides instant access to information about terminals and depots, such as waiting times and disruptions, while in transit. Just like with apps such as Flitsmeister, drivers can self-report disruptions. By working together, waiting times are reduced and flow improved.

De Rijcke urges TLN members to use Port Alert. 'Experience the benefits for yourself. Also, don't forget to report disruptions. The more information there is, the more reliable it will be. AI-generated data is also being tested at the moment. As soon as a terminal or depot sends a message about a disruption, AI picks it up right away and translates it into a message in Port Alert. This is how we work together for improved and faster throughput in the port!'

One of the promising developments is the virtual queue, which will be further developed in the coming period. This concept will enable drivers to wait at suitable locations safely and comfortably with facilities, without congestion or unnecessary waiting. 'The available capacity of terminals is optimally utilised from stack module to transfer points. It improves safety and makes it more predictable,' explains De Rijcke.

Port Alert provides insight, therefore improved information for drivers and planning. If the planner comes across where the disruptions are, they can respond much faster to current situations and send the driver to another location. Van Eeden Petersman: 'At the moment, we are using the information in our day-to-day planning. The great advantage is that our planners are not just busy booking or changing time slots.'

Implementing the app among drivers still needs some time, he continues. 'That goes in steps. And the app is currently evolving. As it stands, you can only download the app on your mobile. A link with the board computer is being looked at. I’m convinced that Port Alert will play an important role in our sector.'

Up-to-date insight and improved choices

Currently, about 1,600 trucks are connected to Port Alert. This data provides insight into turnaround times and terminal accessibility. Suppose there is a three-hour turnaround time somewhere, I can act on that and contact my client. What do they want me to do? Do they want me to log waiting hours or look for another location, temporary or otherwise? Or deliver the container a day later? That information gives you greater latitude.’ Drivers can enter the TAR code for an up-to-date status and insight into the administration surrounding the visit. A terminal or depot can also inform the driver via the app.

‘We started with an outline of Port Alert some time ago. The product is now taking shape and it’s a hot topic in the market. The feature to check your TAR will be a welcome addition for many drivers. In addition, the virtual queue is coming increasingly closer. And above all, let's not forget that we will have all the info (disruptions, turnaround time & appointment) related to terminals and depots in one app, says Reimar Mommers, Transport Planning Manager at Van der Helm Logistics.

Relevance

Alexander van Eeden Petersman (director at Vepco) stresses that Port Alert helps bridge the gap between carriers and terminals. 'The distance between carriers and terminals is increasing in IT technical terms. As road hauliers, we are scattered across the country, and we haven’t managed to coordinate our efforts to improve this. IT developments are moving faster in the terminals than in our sector. Through this broad collaboration, we have a product we can all work with.'

Port Alert is a joint initiative of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Portbase and TLN. 'It is one central place for all disruptions. When I log in, I instantly see what’s going on in the port of Rotterdam, without having to search in multiple systems,’ says Jeroen de Rijcke, seaport logistics policy advisor and submarket secretary at TLN.
