From start-ups to large companies

‘We have made every effort to ensure that the participation process is as user-friendly and accessible as possible,’ Pieter says. This means that participation is open to everyone, from large companies to startups.’ The Port of Rotterdam Authority has made a total of 3.5 million euros available. ‘We hope to enable many companies to accelerate the implementation of their sustainability plans.’

The rules

  • It must be a new project that has not yet commenced.

  • The implementation must take place within the designated port emission area and be completed before 2030.

  • The solution must demonstrably result in a minimum reduction of 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

  • The financial contribution is a maximum of €300 per tonne of CO₂ reduction and €700,000 per proposal.

  • Solutions that have already started or for which emission rights or EU-ETS apply are not eligible.

Anyone who can reduce emissions can participate. Pieter: ‘Carbonbid does not prescribe specific solutions or technologies: as a company, you are responsible for determining the most effective approach and overseeing its implementation.’ According to Pieter, only the result matters: successful CO₂ reduction is rewarded. However, the solution must meet the following minimum requirements:

Accelerating sustainability

Pieter de Waard
Project Leader Carbonbid

Carbonbid is part of a broader set of initiatives by the Port of Rotterdam Authority to make the port climate-neutral and future-proof. ‘With initiatives designed to meet market needs, we as the Port of Rotterdam Authority aim to accelerate emissions reduction within the port area and to foster collaborative innovation among companies.’

The initiative arose in response to the question: ‘How can the Port of Rotterdam Authority allocate financial resources to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the port area in the short term?’ Pieter: ‘We noted that, while many solutions, techniques and ideas exist to reduce emissions in the port area, their implementation is often unsuccessful.’ According to Pieter, the Port of Rotterdam Authority has other initiatives to accelerate sustainability that focus on urgency and knowledge, but it can also play an important role in accelerating sustainability through funding. And thus, Carbonbid was born. ‘An initiative that rewards the most effective solutions aimed at achieving a societal goal – namely CO2 reduction.’

HI FROM THE FUTURE

*CO₂e includes not only CO₂ but also greenhouse gases.

Carbonbid is a new initiative to reduce greenhouse gases in the Rotterdam port area. Companies with a concrete plan to reduce emissions in the Rotterdam port area by 2030 can apply for a contribution of up to €700,000 for implementation.

‘Carbonbid offers significant benefits not only to companies operating in the port and port users, but also to suppliers of emission reduction solutions. You can accelerate the reduction of your own emissions and contribute to lowering emissions across the entire port area,’ says Project Leader Pieter de Waard. ‘Additionally, you can prioritise investments in making your business processes more environmentally sound, whilst also positioning yourself at the forefront of innovation and ensuring enhanced preparation for the future.’

Suppose there is a concrete plan within your company to reduce emissions in the Rotterdam port area, but you face financial barriers to implementation. Carbonbid provides a solution. This new initiative from the Port of Rotterdam Authority provides companies with a financial contribution to support the implementation of CO₂e* reduction solutions.
